“Arriving to the Land of the Mezcal (Llegando a la tierra del mezcal),” Karla Wong (Mexican, b. 1974), 2026.

CHICAGO (November 2026) — Oaxacan culture and Día de los Muertos iconography heavily influence the gorgeous, large-scale oil paintings of Chicagoan Karla Wong, now on display in this solo exhibition at the Intuit Art Museum. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, Wong graduated law school and then harnessed her lifelong passion for drawing, initially working for a decade as a forensic and witness sketch artist. Eventually, her art practice evolved and she moved to Chicago. In a statement, Intuit associate curator Christina Stavros said, “Karla Wong’s paintings are encoded with references to her life experiences as a Mexican immigrant and as a trans woman.” Wong will appear at the museum for an artist talk Saturday afternoon; more info here.
