As a meditation on survival, creativity, and care, the film pays tribute to Lajuana’s enduring legacy and the community that continues to hold her memory alive.

Each 30 minute screening will be followed by a Q&A and reception.

My Mother is an Artist is an intimate portrait of Lajuana Lampkins, a self-taught street artist and mother whose vivid creations and raw storytelling made her a beloved fixture in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. Her work captures the beauty, struggle, and spirit of everyday life—rendered through a lens shaped by love, loss, and resilience.

Through vérité footage and deeply personal interviews, the film follows Lajuana as she creates, connects, and heals through her art while navigating grief and transformation. At its heart, My Mother is an Artist challenges audiences to reconsider who gets to be seen, valued, and remembered in the world of art.
