lecture on anna zemankova
February 22, 2003

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art will present a lecture on artist Anna Zemankova by curator Annie Carlano from the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe on Saturday, February 22, 2 p.m. The lecture is free; refreshments will be served.

Zemkanova, who lived her life in Prague, enjoyed drawing as a child, but did not pursue this interest and had no formal training. She worked as a dental technician and raised three children. She began drawing her organic images after suffering from serious depression. She often worked from 4 a.m. – 7 a.m., which she considered her magic hours, when she was inspired by her “creator spirit.”

The work of Zemankova can be seen in the e xhibit Eight from Europe: A Study Collection which introduces Chicago audiences to works by Adolf Wölfli (Switzerland), Carlo Zinelli (Italy), Augustin Lesage (France), Pascal Verbena (France), Anna Zemankova (Czechoslovakia), Scottie Wilson (Scotland), Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern (Germany), and Madge Gill (England). This exhibition runs through the April 2003. Running concurrently is Levi Fisher Ames: Menagerie, through March 1.
