Panel Discussion on Chicago Imagists and Outsider Artists
Is it any wonder that there is a strong link between outsider artists and Chicago Imagists? The work of outsider artists impressed the Imagists because it was "created by individuals generally ignored by the guardians of contemporary cultural values." Considering themselves outsiders, Chicago artists felt a kinship with self-taught artists and were excited to see such creativity thriving without the stewardship of New York City's elite art world. At Intuit, a panel including artist Jim Nutt; Lisa Stone, curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and James Yood, art critic and professor of art history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, will discuss the mutual influence and collaboration between the works of outsider artists and those of the Chicago Imagists. The talk will feature artists like Roger Brown, Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, and Ray Yoshida, and self-taught artists, such as Joseph Yoakum, Henry Darger, Lee Godie, Aldo Piacenza, William Dawson, Pauline Simon, Martin Ramirez, and others, whose work is currently on view in Intuit's exhibit, Genesis: Gifts and Promised Gifts from Intuit's Permanent Collection. A $5 donation is suggested for admission to the panel discussion. Running concurrently in Intuit's galleries are Genesis: Gifts and Promised Gifts from Intuit's Permanent Collection, running through December 30, and Old World, New Country: The Art of Joseph Garlock, running through January 15.
