STICKS

January 16, 2009 - April 18, 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, January 16, 5-8pm

Self-taught artists compelled to create often use whatever materials are available to them. Jan Petry curates this exhibit celebrating those artists who have picked up a stick and made it their own. Tree trunks, branches, twigs, roots…. telephone poles, matchsticks, toothpicks… transformed in the hands of those with the vision to see in the humble stick what others do not.

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art opened STICKS January 16, 2009. The work of well known artists Keith Goodhart, Kevin Sampson, LeRoy Person, David Philpot, Bessie Harvey, D. Bill, Wayne Kusy, C.P.Ligon and Emory Blagdon will join that of unknown makers who express themselves in a stick of wood.

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art promotes public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of intuitive and outsider art through education,
exhibition, collecting and publishing.  Intuit defines ‘intuitive and outsider art’ as the work of artists who demonstrate little influence from the mainstream art world,
and who instead are motivated by their unique personal vision. This definition includes art brut, non-traditional folk art, self-taught art, and visionary art.
