The Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art 2005

847 W. Jackson Blvd., 2nd Floor Chicago, IL

Press release:
The 3rd Annual Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art
Premier Art Fair Presents Outsider Art from 40 of the country's leading dealers

The best of folk and outsider art can be found this fall in Chicago at the third annual Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art. One of the premier outsider art events in country and the only of its kind in the Midwest, this sale and exhibition features art from 40 of the leading dealers in folk and outsider art from across the country. The show is the primary fundraiser for Intuit, a nonprofit art center with a mission to promote appreciation for self-taught art forms that have emerged outside of established academic traditions.

Outsider art refers to the raw and often idiosyncratic works created by individuals who lack formal artistic training or knowledge of art world traditions. Collectors, art enthusiasts, and those with an eye for edgy and eccentric creations can look forward to masterworks from renowned artists in the outsider canon such as Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, and Rev. Howard Finster, alongside nontraditional quilts, found objects, and quirky one-of-a-kind antiques.

The show will be held in Chicago's west loop, on the second floor of 847 W. Jackson. Show dates and hours are Saturday October 1, 11am-6pm and Sunday October 2, 11am-5pm. Admission is $10. There will be free parking available for show attendees on Sangamon and Jackson.

Those who want to be the first to see and purchase the art are invited to attend the Benefit Preview on Friday September 30, 6pm-10 pm. Tickets for this event are $150 for Intuit members and $175 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased on Intuit's website (http://outsider.art.org) or over the phone (312.243.9088). Preview tickets include cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and live music. All proceeds from ticket sales go to support Intuit's exhibitions and educational programming.

Two guided tours of the show will be offered. On Saturday, October 1, 2:00 pm Lisa Stone of SAIC's Roger Brown Study Collection will discuss Chicago's intimate connection with outsider art by focusing on local figures such as street artist Lee Godie. Sunday October 2, 1:00 pm art therapist Randy Vick of SAIC will lead a walk-through that highlights psychological aspects of selected works.

On Sunday October 2 nd from 2 pm to 4 pm, Intuit will host an open house at our space at 756 N. Milwaukee Avenue. During this time the public is invited to come and see the current show Singular Visions: Images of Art Brut from the Anthony J. Petullo Collection.

The Folk Art Society of America will be holding its annual conference in Chicago the weekend of the Intuit Show, and will be presenting an exciting roster of events and activities.

Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art promotes public awareness, understanding, and appreciation of intuitive and outsider art through education,
exhibition, collecting and publishing.  Intuit defines ‘intuitive and outsider art’ as the work of artists who demonstrate little influence from the mainstream art world,
and who instead are motivated by their unique personal vision. This definition includes art brut, non-traditional folk art, self-taught art, and visionary art.
