Press release:
Elvis as Icon (Lecture by Wendy McDaris)
Perhaps no other person in the 20th century has had as great an impact on our culture as "The King." Elvis Presley influenced it all including music, movies, culture and religion.

Wendy McDaris, independent curator and cultural critic, will lead a gallery talk on Elvis as icon on Sunday, March 19. The talk begins at 11 a.m. at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, 756 N. Milwaukee, Chicago.

During curatorial research for her exhibition "Elvis + Marilyn: 2 x Immortal," McDaris constructed a theory on iconic development. She will demonstrate her findings utilizing contemporary and historical examples of art created by national and international artists. Works from Intuit's current exhibition "E2K: Elvisions 2000" will also be discussed in this context.

"Multiple brilliances came together within the person of Elvis Presley," explains McDaris. "He was beautiful, talented, naturally intelligent, spiritually endowed and possessed fascinating dualities. Artists are among the first people to recognize the cultural importance of such figures."

Presley would have been 65 this year. Intuit's E2K art exhibit features Elvis color photos, fetishes, paintings, ornaments, jewelry boxes, clothing and memorabilia. Fans can even pay homage to "The King" at a golden E2K shrine. The exhibit closes Saturday, March 25.

Intuit will open at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 19, for previewing the exhibit. Coffee and Elvis’ favorite Krispy Kreme donuts will be served. Admission to the gallery talk is free to the public.
